An earth auger machine drills clean, round holes wherever many holes of the same size are needed. The engine sits on top as the powerhead, a clutch passes its power to the gear case, and the bit bolted underneath shaves the soil and carries it up and out of the hole.
- Planting: the ED431 and ED438 take a 150 × 800 mm bit for narrow holes such as seedling planting, ground rods and irrigation stakes.
- Fencing and poles: the ED450 drives a 200 × 800 mm bit sized for fence lines, tree pits and pole footings.
- Large holes: the ED630 turns a 300 × 800 mm bit for tree pits and pole foundations.
Whatever the job, an earth auger machine cuts best with a shaving action driven by the weight of the unit itself, so operators should never lean their body weight on the handles.
Which Gasoline (Petrol) Engine Should an Earth Auger Machine Have?
Every earth auger machine we make is built on a small gasoline (petrol) engine, either two-stroke or four-stroke. The two-stroke powerheads run from 41.5 to 82 cc and 1.25 to 2.6 kW, and the four-stroke powerheads from 31 to 53.6 cc and 0.7 to 1.4 kW.
- Two-stroke (ED430, ED520, ED541, ED630, ED820 and BXS-630): runs on a mixture of gasoline and two-stroke oil, never on straight gasoline; our manual warns that running it on gasoline alone will damage the engine.
- Four-stroke (ED431, ED438, ED450 and ED455): runs on straight fuel with no oil mixing, which matters on sites where several crews share cans.
- Highest output: the ED820, at 82 cc and 2.6 kW.
- Compacted or stony ground: the ED455, with the largest four-stroke engine in the range, has more reserve in compacted or stony ground, where a smaller engine loses speed.

Which Bit and Frame Does an Earth Auger Machine Need?
Every model drills with an 800 mm long bit in a 150, 200 or 300 mm diameter; our earth auger bit sizes guide explains which diameter suits which hole. The frame decides how the machine is handled, because the bit pushes back against the operator as it bites.
- One operator: the ED430 is light enough for one operator to move between holes.
- Single or two-handed work: the ED520 is offered with a standard, twin-handle or rectangular frame, and the ED541 with a standard handlebar or an E-type frame, covering single-operator and braced two-handed work.
- Two operators: the ED820 sits on a rectangular frame so two operators can hold the reaction torque.
- Wheeled: the BXS-630 puts its power unit on a single-wheel barrow frame, so the machine carries its own weight between holes and the wheel absorbs part of the reaction torque while drilling.
What Should You Check Before Using an Earth Auger Machine?
- Wear the right gear: hearing protection, eye protection, a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and closed shoes, with no loose clothing or jewelry that could catch in moving parts.
- Check the machine: make sure every safety guard and the muffler guard are in place, all screws, nuts and bolts are tight, and the blades have no nicks or shiny, worn areas.
- Check the ground: have buried utility lines marked before you dig, clear stones, roots and debris from the surface, and mark each hole position.
- Handle fuel safely: mix two-stroke fuel outdoors in a separate approved container, never in the engine’s own tank, and refuel only with the engine stopped and cooled, away from flames and sparks.
Never let children operate an earth auger machine, never run one under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and never start or run the engine indoors or in a partly enclosed space, where exhaust carbon monoxide builds up.
How Do You Start an Earth Auger Machine?
Put the unit in a stable position on the ground, point the exhaust away from you, and follow the same sequence every time. For a cold engine, our manual gives this order:
- Set the choke to RUN and press the primer bulb until the primer tube is filled with fuel.
- Move the choke to CHOKE and push the engine switch to ON.
- Pull the starter handle out slowly until you feel tension, then pull with a rapid full arm stroke, and let the rope return slowly instead of snapping back.
- Once the engine fires, move the choke to half choke until it runs smoothly, then to RUN.
A warm engine only needs the choke set and the same pull. The moment an earth auger machine starts, release the throttle and put both hands on the handlebar. Never use starting fluid or spray anything into the air cleaner or carburetor.
How Do You Drill a Hole With an Earth Auger Machine?
- Stand with your feet apart and both hands on the handlebar, and set the bit tip on the marked spot with the auger upright.
- Open the throttle and let the bit bite without leaning on the handles; the weight of the unit does the cutting.
- Run at full throttle while drilling rather than letting the engine idle for long periods.
- Lift the bit out every so often to clear loose soil from the hole, then continue to the depth you need.
- If the bit hits a root or rock and stops turning, switch the engine off and let it cool before freeing the bit by hand.
- Release the throttle, lift the bit clear and stop the engine before moving on. Never carry a running earth auger machine between holes, and never leave one running unattended.
The muffler and muffler guard stay extremely hot even after the engine stops, so keep hands and clothing clear of them.
How Do You Maintain and Store an Earth Auger Machine?
- Stop the engine, let it cool and disconnect the spark plug wire before cleaning, adjusting or repairing anything, and wear eye protection while you work.
- Keep the cooling fins and air inlets free of debris, never run without the air cleaner, and wash the filter in warm soapy water, then rinse it and press it dry.
- Replace the spark plug if its electrodes are pitted, burned or covered in deposits, or its porcelain is cracked.
- Keep screws, nuts and bolts tight, and keep the gear case grease up to the top of the gears without overfilling.
- Resharpen or replace nicked blades, and fit the blade protector whenever the auger is not in use.
- For storage longer than a month, add fuel stabilizer and run the engine so it reaches the carburetor, drain the remaining fuel into an approved container, grease the output shaft, and store the bit and powerhead upright.
- Never store an earth auger machine indoors with fuel in the tank, and with fuel in the tank, transport it upright in an open vehicle.

What Do People Ask About Earth Auger Machines?
Why won’t an earth auger machine start?
Check the simple causes first, in the order our manual lists them: the engine switch is off, the spark plug wire is disconnected, the tank is out of fuel, or the spark plug is wet, faulty or wrongly gapped. If it starts hard, stale fuel is a common cause: drain it and refill with fresh fuel, using a fuel stabilizer.
Why does an earth auger machine cut slowly or jump on the ground?
Dull blades or a damaged point make it cut slowly, and blades that are damaged or sharpened incorrectly make it jump. Replace the blades, and file or replace the point. Never try either repair with the engine running. Checking the blades and point before each job catches both problems early.
